Important 2024 Tax Deadlines for You and Your Business
Written by: Anca Stradley, CPA, Dembo Jones
While April 15 is the date most people have on their calendar as “Tax Day,” there are many other important tax deadlines that you should know about. Here are the most important individual and business federal tax deadlines to keep in mind for 2024.
January 2024 tax deadlines: January has passed, but if you paid quarterly estimated tax payments as an individual, or for your business, the fourth quarter individual tax payment, as well as some business fourth quarter payments for tax year 2023, were due on January 15, 2024.
If you paid more than $600 in rents or compensation to a person who is not an employee, during the course of your trade or business, you were required to issue a Form 1099-NEC or Form 1099-MISC. There are other Forms 1099, and they were all due to be mailed to recipients by January 31, 2024. The filing deadline with the IRS or state authorities varies, depending on the types of 1099s.
March 2024 tax deadlines: If your business files a tax return as a partnership or S Corporation, the federal tax returns and some state tax returns for your business are due to be filed by March 15, 2024. This is also the deadline to file an S Corporation or partnership federal tax extension, which will extend the federal tax deadline to September 16, 2024.
April 2024 tax deadlines: Your personal income tax return (Form 1040) is due to be filed by April 15, 2024. If your business is organized as a single member LLC or sole proprietorship, the tax filing deadline for these entities is also April 15, 2024, as the single member LLC or sole proprietorship is included on Schedule C of your individual income tax return. If you need more time to file, you can request an extension by April 15, 2024, and the extended tax deadline will be October 15, 2024.
The foreign bank account reporting (FBAR), Corporations, trusts and retirement contributions deadline is also April 15, 2024. And if you pay estimated quarterly tax payments as an individual or for your business, the 2024 first quarter tax payment is due on this date as well.
June 2024 tax deadlines: If you pay quarterly estimated tax payments, the 2024 second quarter tax payment is due on June 17, 2024.
September 2024 tax deadlines: All the extended calendar year partnerships and S corporations tax returns must be filed by September 16, 2024. If you pay quarterly estimated payments, the 2024 third quarter tax payment is due on this day as well. Most extended trust tax returns are due to be filed by September 30, 2024.
October 2024 tax deadlines: October 15, 2024 is the extended tax deadline for individuals, but also sole proprietors and single member LLCs, included on Schedule C of an individual return. This is also the tax deadline for extended calendar year corporations.
December 2024 tax deadlines: Some 2024 fourth quarter tax payments are due December 16, 2024 (with the rest of them being due January 15, 2025). At the same time, December is a busy month for end-of-year tax planning so plan to begin working with your Dembo Jones advisor so you don’t miss any tax savings opportunities.
As described above, your individual and business tax deadlines depend on the type of returns you file. This list is far from all-inclusive, as there are other business-related tax deadlines – including tax deadlines for fiscal year returns and various state tax filing deadlines – that do not always follow the federal tax deadlines.
If you have questions about any of your tax filings or deadlines, the tax professionals at Dembo Jones are ready to help.
